This public health crisis has left us all feeling a bit anxious and maybe heading to the fridge to indulge in a spot of comfort eating - now, we don’t blame you. The coronavirus outbreak is scary and it’s natural for people to turn to things that make us happy.

We don’t want to deter you from this but for your own sake, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet and good overall health to not only protect your immune system but also to make sure you’re ready to get out and enjoy life once the coronavirus outbreak has gone. So, with that in mind, here at Diets2Go, we’ve come up with a few tips for maintaining a good diet during this coronavirus situation.

Keep Healthy Snacks Around

Snacking happens to the best of us, but, when the urge strikes it’s important to understand that we can control what we snack on. Leave the junk food behind and make sure you’ve got healthy snacks like nuts, fruit (frozen fruit is a good option too), hummus and yoghurt in your cupboards.

Hydrate

This can’t be emphasised enough - make sure you hydrate! It’s the easiest thing in the world to do but to a large extent, we forget about it. Hydrating is vital to maintaining a good diet. It doesn’t have to be water either - you can also get hydration from squash, tea or coffee.

Make Set Meal Times

To avoid the perils of snacking and comfort eating, set yourself and your family times to eat. For instance, breakfast is at 9am lunch at 1pm and dinner at 7pm. When those meal times do come around opt for lean meats, fresh produce (where possible), oily fishes like canned tuna and other similar food items - all are great options to maintain good overall health.

Do Allow Yourself A Treat

A treat now and again is perfectly fine, in fact, we encourage it! This coronavirus outbreak is scary and stressful for a lot of people, and if the odd snack brings you comfort then go ahead - it’s all about promoting balance and just making sure you’re not overdoing it. So the next time you’re taking your daily walk don’t be afraid to pick up something that makes you happy!

The Freezer is Your Friend

Often the home of frozen pizzas and ice cube trays, this coronavirus outbreak has shone a light on our fantastic freezers! Why? Well, there is so much fresh produce that can be frozen or that’s already frozen in the supermarket. Gone are the days of having to worry about eating fresh produce in 2 or 3 days. Frozen fruit like berries, frozen vegetables like spinach, broccoli and frozen proteins like chicken and fish are all great options if you’re looking to maintain a healthy diet for a few weeks.
